QUALIFYING TIMES
(AS OF 2021)
AUTOMATIC VS PROVISIONAL TIMES
What's the difference between automatic and provisional qualifying state times?

There are thousands of High School Swimmers and Divers in Arizona. In order for the state championship meets to run in a timely manner, the AIA has set specific time standards that must be met in order for a student athlete to qualify to attend. Each student athlete may qualify for up to 2 individual events and 2 relays OR 1 individual event and 3 relay.

Automatic: Student athlete has qualified for the individual event based on his/her/their time and the coach will enter them to swim/dive at the state meet. The coach will help the student athlete select individual events if they qualify for more than 2 events.

Provisional: Student athlete has a good chance of qualifying for the individual event based on his/her/their time. The total number of entries varies from year to year and this determines how many entries are allowed at the state meet. For example, the meet allows 32 swimmers in an event the top 32 best times will attend the meet, but each swimmer must have achieved at least the provisional time.

**Qualifying times can only be achieved at qualifying meets(aka invites)
